Today, under the leadership of Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Nigeria signed a landmark Memorandum of Agreement with Shanghai Haiqi Industrial Company Ltd. (China) for the sustainable local production of insulin.
• Affordable healthcare: Reduced dependence on imports will make insulin more accessible and affordable for families.
• Health security: No longer will Nigeria’s diabetic patients be at the mercy of international shortages or price spikes.
• Jobs & expertise: This initiative creates new employment opportunities and develops technical skills in biotechnology.
• Regional leadership: Nigeria is positioned as a hub for medical biotechnology across Africa.
This milestone reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which champions health security, industrialization, innovation, and self-reliance as pillars of national development.
By producing insulin locally, Nigeria is sending a strong message: we will no longer be passive consumers—we are becoming producers, innovators, and leaders in Africa’s biotech revolution.
This is not just about insulin—it’s about renewed hope for every Nigerian family affected by diabetes. It’s about building a healthier, stronger, and more innovative Nigeria.
